Ladysmith voters elect two new aldermen

Luke Klink

The Ladysmith Common Council will have two new members following an election Tuesday marked by light turnout.

About one in every five registered city voters cast a ballot in the election, which featured two challenged city common council races as well as several statewide races.

In district 5, challenger Marty Reynolds defeated incumbent Winnie Lee on a 77-46 vote.

In district 7, incumbent Fred Love defeated challenger Ray Carlson on a 42-19 vote.

In district 3, incumbent Mike Hraban was running unopposed and received 33 votes. Mark Stensvold and Jeanette Vlcek each received one write-in vote.

In district 1, Carol Huiras-Rozak ran unopposed and received 39 votes. Alderman Chuck Goin did not seek re-election.

Reynolds called his victory “awesome” and “good news.” He said he was looking forward to returning to the common council after serving as the city’s mayor from 1986-92 and again in 2002 before resigning after making controversial comments about post-tornado recovery efforts.

Lee narrowly defeated Reynolds for the same position two years ago.

On the Ladysmith-Hawkins School Board, incumbents John Ziemer with 653 votes and Sue Hendricks with 565 votes return to the school board after running unopposed.

The Flambeau School Board will have one new member, as four candidates faced off for two open seats. Challenger Doug Dicus with 393 votes and incumbent Sue Mills with 323 votes won seats on the school board, defeating challenger Amy Lund with 312 votes and incumbent Theresa Gulish with 146 votes.

On the Lake Holcombe School Board, incumbent Jeffrey Anders with 290 votes returns after being challenged by George Ronnestrand with 167 votes for one open position on the school board.

In state races:

— Incumbent State Supreme Court Justice Shirley Abrahamson easily defeated challenger Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Randy Koschnick based on preliminary results reported by the Associated Press.

— Deputy State Superintendent Tony Evers defeated parental advocate and former nurse Rose Fernandez. Former state superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster did not seek re-election.

Vote totals were not immediately available.
