BOND SET— Gregory D’Amico (right) appears in court Tuesday afternoon, when bail was set for the shooting of Kathleen D’Amico on Monday night. Citing degree of violence, potential penalties up to 60 years and the nature of the charges, the Rusk County Circuit Court Judge Frederick A. Henderson called D’Amico a flight risk and set bail at $500,000 and no contact with the victim and their two children.

Shooting suspect officially charged in criminal complaint

A shooting Monday night followed by an hour-long manhunt involving at least three law enforcement agencies ended with an arrest shortly before 9:30 p.m.

The suspect, Gregory E. D’Amico, 42, was arrested. He is accused of shooting his estranged wife, Kathleen D'Amico, at a home in the Town of Big Bend about 10 miles south of Bruce.

He was officially charged Friday in Rusk County Circuit Court with the crimes:

— Attempted first degree intentional homicide; domestic abuse-infliction of physical pain or injury; domestic abuse assessments.

—Injury by negligent use of a dangerous weapon.

— Endanger safety by reckless use of a firearm.

— Aggravated battery, domestic abuse-infliction of physical pain or injury, domestic abuse assessments.

— Burglary of a building or dwelling.

— Pointing a firearm at another.

Officers arriving at the scene found a 42-year-old female on the road, with an apparent gunshot would to the face. Her 17-year-old daughter was with her and was unharmed. The woman was taken by ambulance to Rusk County Memorial Hospital, and later twice flown by helicopter to different medical facilities. The initial report was that her injuries are serious, but not life threatening, but family members say the victim faces many reconstructive surgeries to repair the damage to her face.

Family members said a bullet from a 22-caliber rifle entered Kathleen’s right temple and exited through her left cheek. She was in surgery at Mayo Clinic the day after the incident, according to Tiffany Bose, the victim’s sister-in-law.

“She is going to lose her eye because the bullet severed her optic nerve on the right side,” Bose said.

Gregory D'Amico is currently being held in the Rusk County Jail on $500,000 bond. He faces a maximum of 101 years and nine months and not more than $210,000 in fines.

More of this story will appear in the January 14 and 21 print editions of the Ladysmith News.
