Despite rain, fair board optimistic about event

More garbage cans. More garbage can emptying. More cleaning up. More volunteers. More financial cushion. Less rain.
The Rusk County Community Fair Board met last Thursday to discuss the 2010 event and plan future events. Heavy rains that washed out the Tri-State Truck and Tractor Pull on Thursday night of the fair and turned the grassy parking area into a quagmire for most of the weekend were foremost on board members’ minds.

Mayor’s vote breaks sidewalk tie

Ladysmith Mayor Dan Gudis broke a 3-3 common council deadlock Monday, casting the deciding vote on whether or not the city should levy special assessments for sidewalk, curb and gutter improvements this year.
“We’ll have to stick with 110 years. I’ll have to vote yes,” said Gudis, referring to how many years the city has been assessing property owners for sidewalk.

Reserve Heart of Gold seats by Aug. 28 deadline
Over the summer the Rusk County Community Foundation accepted nominations identifying persons in the Rusk County community who have demonstrated they have a “heart of gold.”

Fair leader calls crowd the ‘largest ever seen’
is in the books and was a total success despite heavy rains on Friday that caused the cancelation of the Tri-State Truck and Tractor Pull, according to fair board president David Groothousen.
The headlining country music act “Diamond Rio” appeared to be a very popular attraction on Saturday with an estimated concert attendance of about 3,000 spectators, Groothousen said. He estimated between 4,000 and 5,000 people in total attended the fair throughout the day on Saturday.
