The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), at the request of the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating an officer involved death that took place on the evening of Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018 at a residence in the Village of Hawkins.

A caller told dispatchers there was a man at the residence who was intoxicated and concerned the intoxicated man would become violent.

Rusk County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the location and the altercation resulted in one deputy discharging their firearms.

Law enforcement rendered first-aid to the subject on scene, and the subject was transported by ambulance to a hospital. The man later died from the injuries.

No law enforcement were injured during the incident.

The two involved deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.

The Wisconsin DOJ-led investigation of this incident has been a collaboration between DCI, Wisconsin State Patrol and Rusk County Coroner’s Office.

The Rusk County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Rusk County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
