Kristine Marie Mikunda was born May 21, 1969 in Ladysmith, the first child of Jim and Cathy (Hoehn) Mikunda of Conrath. She died on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, at her home in Sheldon, after a 17 year-long courageous battle with breast cancer.
Kris attended schools in the Flambeau School District, graduating with honors in the Flambeau Class of 1987. She will be remembered for her academic excellence as well as her accomplishments on the high school track team. Kris attended UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls where she majored in dairy science. She and Bruce Burch of Sheldon were married on Sept. 19, 1992 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Sheldon. They had two children, a daughter born in 1998 and a son born in 2000, who they raised on Burch Haven Farm which was founded by Bruce’s paternal grandparents nearly 100 years ago.
Kris’ lifelong dream was to be a wife, a mother, and a dairy farmer, all of which she accomplished and more. She was a lover of the outdoors and all of God’s creation. There were no flowers, trees or bushes she couldn’t identify. Whatever the weather, she could be seen walking the fields, pastures and woods of Mikunda Meadows and Burch Haven Farms accompanied by her dogs, often times a cat or two along with her children. Family and friends will remember Kris for the compassion of her heart, the beauty of her soul, generosity of her spirit and a great big smile for everyone. The neighborhood kids knew there was always room for them at her table, as well as it being a place someone would listen.
Kris is survived by her husband of 26 years, Bruce, and their children, Jessie and Jake, all of Sheldon; her parents, Jim and Cathy (Hoehn) Mikunda of Conrath; two brothers, Dan (Erika) Mikunda of Ladysmith and Dave Mikunda of Fall Creek; two sisters-in-law, Kathryn Burch-Lawler (Scott) of Astoria, S.D.; and Mary Phillips (Patrick) of Mounds View, Minn.
Kris was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Joe and Irene Mikunda; maternal grandparents, Bob and Grace Hoehn, parents-in-law, Harvey and Carol Sue Burch; uncles, David Hoehn and John Basic and cousins, Kaitlyn Basic and infant David Alan Hoehn.
