The Ladysmith football team traveled to Barron last Friday night to take on the Bears as they looked to cap off their homecoming week with a victory over the Lumberjacks. The Lumberjacks had other plans though as they took the field Friday night in Heart O’ North Conference action.
The Jacks didn’t waste much time in the opening quarter as senior, Caden Dupee got the Jacks on the board first on a 84 yard touch down run to put the Jacks up 8-0 after a two point conversion catch by Tru Dupee. The Jacks were just warming up as Jacob Palumbo scored on the next procession from four yards out to put the Jacks up 14-0 after a failed conversion attempt. The score was 14-6 after the first quarter as the Bears were able to put together a scoring drive at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter belonged to the Lumberjacks as they out scored the Bears 24-0 to take a 38-6 halftime lead as Palumbo scored his second touchdown of the night from one yard out, Carter Closs scored on a 74 yard run and Connor Franson was on the opposite end of a Peyton Rogers touchdown pass from 28 yards out with seconds to go in the quarter as the Jacks converted all three two point conversions in the quarter.
With a commanding lead the Jacks were in cruise control in the second half, but the offense was still able to find the end zone as Trent Vollendorf scored in the third quarter from one yard out as the Jacks defense held the Bears scoreless for the whole third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Bears out score the Jacks 14-6, as the Jacks went on to a 52-20 victory a they spoiled the Bears attempt at a Homecoming victory Friday night.
The Lumberjack offense went onto putt up big numbers Friday night as the offense had 467 total yards as they rushed for 396 yards and passed for 71 yards. Leading the way for Ladysmith was Caden Dupee with 135 yards rushing on seven attempts, Palumbo finished with 87 yards on the night while Closs ended Friday night with 80 yards on the ground.
Peyton Rogers was 4 for 7 on the night for 69 yards and a touchdown strike to Connor Franson who finished the ball game with 39 yards on three catches and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Jacks held the Bears to 201 total yards as they were led by Franson’s six tackles and one sack. Dylan Abbiehl finished the night with two sacks, Palumbo had 1.5 sacks, Jared Fredrick and Isaiah Rolli both had a sack a piece and Wade Stanger finished with a half a sack against Barron.
The Jacks are on the road this week as they travel to the northwest corner of the state to take on the Northwestern Tigers Friday night at 7 p.m.
