Jills cage Bulldogs in opener
The Ladysmith Lumberjills opened up the 2019-2020 basketball season with a huge conference win over the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Bulldogs on the road in Heart O’ North Conference action.
The first half saw the Jills get off to a fast start as they took a 28-14 lead into the half. “It was good to see the girls get out to a fast start and get into rhythm right away. Our girls have been practicing hard and with many new faces seeing the court, it was good to see us get some cohesion in the first half and get out to a nice lead heading into halftime,” stated head coach, Brad Cody.
The second half the Jills held their lead as well as outscoring the Bulldogs 33-27 as they went on to a 61-41 victory on the road to open the season with a conference victory on the road.
Leading the way for the Jills was freshman, Raemalee Smith with 17 points and eight rebounds. Emily Egle scored 12 points as Allison Clark added eight points and five steals. Brittney Wiles chipped in seven points as did Emma Dieckman to help lead the Jills to victory. “We had a lot of girls score as nine Jills were on the board for us. It was a nice start to the season, and we only look to keep improving each time we step on the court. We just have to keep playing as a team and keep doing the little things right and big things will happen,” coach Cody concluded.
The Jills take on Stanely-Boyd over Thanksgiving break and return to the court after break on Mon. Dec. 2 as they host Athens.
