The Lake Holcombe/Cornell Knights were on the road last Friday night as they took the long bus trip north to take on the Webster Tigers in conference action.
The first quarter saw the Tigers get the early 8-0 over the Knights as Webster extended their lead to 16-0 in the second quarter before the Knights offense settled in to get on the board on a pass from Luke Geist to Wyatt Viegut for 34 yards to bring the Tigers lead to 16-6. Viegut capped off the scoring drive with the two point conversion to bring the score to 16-8 before the Knights tied the ball game up at 16-16 on a Geist touch down run from seven yards out that was finished off with a Kaden Kinney two point conversion that sent both teams into half time tied at sixteen a piece.
The second quarter saw both defenses buckle down as both offenses were held scoreless in the third quarter, which meant the fourth quarter would determine the winner of Friday’s slug fest in Webster.
It was Webster that eventually found the end zone in the fourth quarter as they also converted the two point conversion as they took the 24-16 victory, which handed the Knights their second only loss of the season.
Geist was the offensive leader as the senior threw for 129 yards and one touchdown. Geist also rushed for the only other score for the Knights Friday night as Josh Jones led the rushing attack with 25 yards. Tristen Anderson finished the contest with 46 yards receiving on three catches as Viegut had 35 yard on the night and Aiden Story finished with 33 yards receiving.
Kinney was the leader on defense as the junior finished with 11 tackles, a sack and one tackle for a loss while Jones and Balow both had an interception for the Knights in the 24-16 loss on the road.
The Knights are back home as they look to wrap up the regular season against the undefeated Grantsburg Pirates before heading into the first round of the WIAA playoffs as the only play-off eligible team in the area in 11-man football. Friday night is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
